I've read about these in a bunch of threads and think that they have to do with big filtration systems or something like that.
Someone please tell me?

A sump is basically a second tank connected to the first tank by overflows and water pumps. People use them for extra water volume and places to hide equipment such as heaters and skimmers. Some people use them to take up nutrients, or to filter the water or to grow live food for the first tank.

I would not know. I do not use sumps on any tanks I set up.
