right now, i have fake plants that are left alone, and one very small plant that is left alone by all but my pleco when he gets really hungry......i'm not sure what kind of plant it is, but it came from a bulb that i planted in the tank a while back. are there any suggestions of plants that might be able to survive in my tank that i can get at petco or petsmart? (there aren't any full-on aquatic stores anywhere near my house)

What kind of Cichlids? Large or small? Pleco makes things very difficult if they are not well fed. This is a good question for the cichlid section on AC.

electric blue ahli, jd, 2 assorted africans

Are these for your 29 gal tank..?

if so, you're either overstocked now, or you soon will be as these guys grow (not to mention the SA/African mixing no-no going on here...)

At anyrate, you asked about plants... You have Cichlid species that are known diggers and munchers of plants. The good news is that there are some low light plant species that can be tied to driftwood & large stones that they (usually) won't eat. Java ferns, Java (& some other mosses)... If you can get a fairly large one planted, they wouldn't be able to uproot a sword either (but the sword would also seriously outgrow a 29 unless you could find a smaller cultivar - sub Kleiner-Barr sized). The same holds for well established Vals, but these are at least somewhat likely to be eaten, especially the emergent runners.
