Has anyone ever changed out their substrate by gravel vaccing it out?

I am considering doing this with my python as I want to change over from play sand to a dark colored substrate.

Possibly eco complete or a mixture of that and Tahitian moon sand

or use amazonia. Anyone ever removed sand this way?

Yes.:dance2: It's easier that way. I had a bit of time getting it done with the MTS in the sand, though. So I just took off the tube thing on the gravel vac and just used the airline tubing, then the snails went right through and didn't clog it up. I have tahitian moon sand.

I agree with Sammie, play sand is easy to remove with a larger gravel vac although you may have to add more water to get it all. I often use a very thin layer in Q tank & pitch it, fish seem less neurotic with substrate.
