Anchoring wood in a tank

I bought some Jarver fern and an interesting branch (I think it was from a brance, don’t know but the shape was something I thought was nice) from my LFS. When I got home I put the fern in my tank and the wood it was on sank but when I pot the other piece of wood in my tank I discovered my mistake. Wood floats (in my defence I know this but I had 1 of those momentsJ).

So my question is what is your susgestion for making my piece of wood sink to the bottom of my tank so that when the Jarver fern starts spreading I can spread it to the new bit of wood?

Its a bit too big for me to stick in a pot on the stove to boil it so is it ok to leave it floating in the tank till it is waterloged so the fish get used to it?
 
Floating may take a while. Can you use some fishing line and a rock or other decorations to anchor it down? Or attach a piece of slate to it with stainless steel screws or silicone?

I think I might try fishing line and rocks till its waterlogged.
 
Boiling one end and the other end later will help considerably even if it will not fit in a pot well.

I do this and simply placed a piece of granite on it for a month or so. This works well.

You could also try putting it in your bathtub and pour boiling water on it. That will kinda help it sink and get rid of any nasties on it.

BTW, it's called java fern, not "jarver fern." :)
 
I let my driftwood soak for 2 weeks doing the rotation thing cuz it wouldnt fit in the bucket. When i put it in the tank it still would not sink. I ended up taking a tubing suction cup clip and sticking that on the back of the tank and sliding it down to wedge the wood under it. It was fairly not invasive and very easy solution. Only had to leave it there for about a week and the wood now stays down on its own.
