how long does wellaby wood need to be submerged for the tannins to stop coming leeching? It is still creating very dark "tea bag" water. I have had it soaking for about 2 hours so far (I know it will take longer but I am just wondering.) Will it ever? or will I have to keep carbon in the tank to continually take the coloring out?

Thanks for the help.

Did your "Wellaby wood" have a tag on it when you got it?

What was on it? "Product of South Africa" something like that? I've never actually seen labelled "Wellaby wood."

Why "Wellaby?" It's regular Mopane colophospermum isn't it?

It's a very small tag... not very detailed.

IMO - excellent choice of wood!!

Soak it for a few days, replacing the water and turning the wood too... Boiling could help the process. I would want some tannins, but understand why some don't..

I agree 80gJoe... it sinks immediately off the shelf and has a nice color. BTW, I'm not totally worried about tanins.... however I don't want it to take over my tank :) This is for my 10 gallon.. I am thinking about getting 2 pieces for my 30.

A great dark color underwater too.

So it's "Welaby" not "Wellaby."
