View Full Version : Is there such a thing as too much filtration?

I just bought an XP3 for my 65g tank and in the process, moved my XP2 to the 29g. There seems to be a DANG good amount of movement in the 29g now as opposed to before (HOT Magnum previously). I have angels/cories/plecs in the 29g and just want to make sure I've not ruined their lives...

why don't you adjust the flow down? I have an xp2 on my 36g corner, but only have the flow at about half so my fish don't get blown all around.

Hmm... I wasn't aware you could adjust it. I was just reading the manual and looking at the filter - I don't see anything that could adjust it.

do you have the spray bar on it? at the start of the spray bar is a knob, you turn the knob to reduce the flow. iguess it would be there regardless of whether you use the spray bar,...comes of the discharge like a T.

Yes, I do. I see the part you're talking about and I wasn't using it. In fact, since I used my own parts, I had to glue them in, so I'm going to have to see if I can use the valve. Good call - thanks!

dont turn the flow down..... what i would do is put the spry bar so its angled at the glass. that way the current slows down some.

or you could do that..didnt really work out for me, as my tank is a corner tank so i had to turn down the flow to prevent a whirlpool effect

pack more media in there like floss and put a sponge filter over the intake that will give you more filtering and slower flow.

When I wrote the OP, I had just put it on and I was worried about how the angels would deal with it. A few hours later and it seems like all is well, really. I did change the angle a little - I dropped it down into the tank a bit more and pointed them up, so some of the action is diminished. No one in the tank seems to mind, but I'll look again tomorrow morning and see how it all is.
I actually thought I might be putting too much media in when I loaded it for the tank - glad I did that now! On next change, I might add a couple more pads.
Thanks for the suggestions!

The angels actually spend some time in the flow and have adjusted to it. With all the plants, it's also cleaner in there now as nothing really gets to settle to the ground for long. I'm liking how things are looking. I probably will add a tall d/w or rock somewhere near the flow to disrupt it a little and give some relief behind the object, but I don't think it's essential.
