I have a 20 gallon tank and I would like to know the maximum number of fish I could put in it and what species.:help2:

20 gallons are good for some of the smaller tropical fish, then you can have a school of them. You could try fish like tetras, guppies, danios...

- dwarf gourami, 6-7 rasboras, 3 kuhli loaches
- pair of rams, 4 cories, 6-7 small tetras
- guppies or platies - 3 males, 6 females. you will have more.
-a pair of convicts
-4 female bettas, a couple mystery snails

there are endless combinations. you should browse websites that sell fish in order to look at pictures and see what you like. THEN come back and ask if it is appropriate for your tank size.

ok I've done some research and I've decided that I would like
-2 platies,2 neon tetra,1 fancy blue guppy and maybe 1 beta
Is this good for my tank size?

by the way my tank is long

no, for several reasons.
platies - two male or two female platies will be okay, but if you get one male and one female, the male will constantly chase and harass the female, stressing her and possibly causing exhaustion which would lead to death of the female. livebearers should be kept in same-sex groups or in mixed sex groups with a ratio of one male for every 2-3 females.
neons - these are schooling fish, which should be kept in a group of at least 6 in order to avoid stress and bring out the most natural behaviors.
guppy - long-tailed male guppies often appear as rivals to male bettas, which results in them being attacked by the betta. not 100%, but likely.
betta - aside from attacking the guppy, the neon tetras will likely nip at the betta, especially because they do not have a full school within which they could chase and nip each other. i have personally had a male betta that overnight lost about 30-40% of his finnage to a trio of neon tetras. all tetras have the potential to be very nippy to long-finned tankmates.

ok,what about
-2 male platies,1 female betta and 1 sword tail,
if this is a good combination would it be good for a 10-20g tank?

how about 3 male platies, 6-7 female platies, one betta male or female? that is a good starting stocklist, and provides room for a few babies to grow. both the platies and the betta will eat some of the fry, so you will not be overstocked for a while.

before you get any new fish though, you should purchase test kits for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, and also equipment for doing water changes - either a python or a bucket and length of hose that you use ONLY for the tank, never with any other chemcials.
