I have recently bought 3 marbled hatchetfish.
Even thought I knew they are jumpers and I keep closing the tank lid, occasionaly I leave it open.
Usually when I am in a hurry for work and dont close the tank in the AM after feeding.
Well, two of the *******s commited suecide.
Can anyone think of a little electronic alert that will start beeping after 2 minutes when the tank lid is left open?

I just can't deal with hatchetfish. In this weather, my tanks have to be open. I found a big Crossocheilus carpet-kipper a couple of weeks back.
Floating plants give a sense of overhead security and there's less suicide...
...except for hatchetfish.

Get some nylon, make a frame as big as the open areas, cover with nylon. Fish bounce back in, instead of carpet surfing. Keeps the heat from building up as well, and is easily cleaned (more of an issue with SW tanks, but hey).

Maybe you could do something to prevent you from shutting the lid, like feeding them when you get home so that you can take the time and make sure everything is ok.

Fish stores sell wire-mesh tops for reptile tanks. A pair of tin snips and some pliers are all you need to make a quick mod for any filters that you're running. If you have an HOB filter, just snip out a tight-fitting area for the filter to hang in. If you have a cannister, then do the same for the filter return.
Another small snip in the front for feeding the fish, and your tank is as close to escape proof as you can make it.
