Yes. Sometimes goldfish start with black on them, i know most of mine have. However over time the black often disapperas because of lighting requirements that is not fulfilled for that pigment to stay. So it is fine.

Just to be sure though....what is your ammonia reading? high ammonia could cause a "burnt" look on the fish in a brown or black color.

Okay well you should be fine so don't worry. Just be sure to do water changes regularly.

Good Luck!

Interesting about ammonia causing a brown or black burnt look. 2 of our 3 goldfish came to us drab brown and badly neglected. Owner started with 8 or 9 goldfish in a 20 gallon tank, 10 gallon filter, and these were the only survivors. One started turning orange within a month, the other lightened in about a month but didn't get orangish for 3 months. We've had them since June and they're still pale, but seem otherwise healthy and active.

i have commets outside and they are always spawning, some babies are yellow gold and some are copper colored and some have black on them and since there pop is white with red, i have almost all white one and a white and yellow gold on it, eventually when they get older most will turn orange gold, but did have one that stayed copper colored till it came up missing one night it was my favorite.:(

I have Commets in an outside pond and every year when they spawn I always get some black or mostly dark coloured fry. These are throwbacks to the original fish commets were selectively breed from. So I have been told buy a breeder. I just find these ones new homes as black fish don't show up well in a pond.
