Good day all,

I am about to transfer 125 pounds live rock with corals to a new tank. I'd like to switch from a crushed coral substrate to sand.

My question is, are there any tricks to getting as many snails, hermits, etc as possible from the crushed coral to deposit in the new tank?

I know there are lots and lots of critters crawling around in there when the lights go out that I don't see in the daylight... just wondering if anyone has tried to do the same and has any advice.

Cheers,

Chris

I recently did exactly the same. The majority of your critters will be hiding in the rocks rather than the substrate. I just gently ran a wooden spoon through the substrate after I'd emptied the tank (left just a little biut of water) and scooped out any critters, I found 2 nassarius snails and a massive peanut worm.

I was gonna say go to walmart or target pick up a cheap plastic sieve and drill the holes a little larger so the CC will pass through. This will allow the larger critters to stay but smaller snails like Ceriths will probably go back through with the CC. (If you have any).
