An excuse to buy another tank....

I got some beautiful baby cherries today! All arrived healthy. I acclimated them to my 20 gallon tetra tank and in they went. I turned my back to throw away the bag and when I turned back, one of my lemons had a shrimp sticking out of it's mouth! I said quite a few cuss words as I fished the others back out and put them in a bucket of tank water that I'd siphoned off this morning and just hadn't dumped yet. I feel just horrible. I was able to get at least half of them out. I couldn't find any more. I'm heart broken.

So on my lunch break I'll be visiting my Wal-Mart to pick up a 10 gallon kit. I'll use the filter from my established tank to jump start the cycle. Anything else that I need to do? I'm thinking of using the little bit of sand that I have left over as substrate. And definately some live plants (since I got a couple starter stems with the shrimp).

*sigh*

I'm still upset about my stupidity. But I've read that a lot of people have cherries in with their tetras. Maybe it's jsut because they were babies?

I had a similar situation recently lol. I had some bleeding heart tetras in a 30g, and i put the cherries in there. When I went to look at them a little later, I saw the tetras eyeing them and trying to take bites at them. The shrimp were quickly moved to a 10g, where they live happily now all by themselves.

LOL. At least all they did was eye them. Mine didn't last 2 minutes before they were lunch. And I fed them as I was putting the shrimp in! Little pigs!

But you know, I see signatures all the time with tetras and cherries in the same tank.

i have tetras and cherries in the same tank, as well as gourami and cherry barbs....and a TON of java moss. When I dropped mine in, i dropped them straight into the moss. The fish swarmed the moss and I didn't see shrimp again for a couple of weeks. Now, 8 weeks later, my original 10 have multiplied to the point that I started an invert only 10g tank that has about 40 cherries of various ages and there are still at least 10-20 in my community tank. They don't really leave the moss though. Moral of the story, they can be kept together, but don't expect to see them very much. I am enjoying them so thoroughly in the smaller tank because they are out in the open and swimming around all the time.

Yeah. I'm going to use the 2 gallon I have at home for a week or 2. I'll stop on the way home and pick up a filter for it. Ten when I get paid again, I'll buy the 10 gallon set up.

Once they berry, how long does it take before I have babies?

Well I got to the store and I had a choice to make. I could just use my existing 2 gallon just plain tank, or I could get a 1 gallon setup with light, (tight fitting) hood, and undergravel filter/air pump, for the same price. Sooo....I got the 1 gallon. Of course I bought a couple of plants for them, too. So all together I spent about $14.

I got home, put some gravel in (from one of my other tanks) and set it up all pretty for the little guys/girls. I treated the water and let it sit for a while. But then I just had to get them out of that bucket. They were just sitting there all pitiful looking.

Since I've put them in their new (but temporary) home, they've been exploring and chasing each other around almost non-stop. They seem to be a lot happier. I'd say that was a well spent $14.

Hiya,

I think everyone who keeps RCS eventually goes thru this. I did at first, and then I started a 15 gallon cherry only tank.. I can sit and watch them all day! I always recommend using a shrimp only tank for these guys, its a shame to hide them in the plants or offer them up for food!!

Good luck!

Ang

Thanks, Ang. I agree and had planned on getting a 10 gallon for them anyway. I just thought they would last in my other tank for a while and I was going to leave some in there and start transferring to the new tank when they berried. Ah, well. Lesson learned.
