Is it possible to use a diaton vortex filter occasionaly to "polish" the water or does it need to run constantly?

Actually, people here don't use it all the time, just usually right after water changes to polish the water or when it needs some polishing.

You can't actually use the D-1 all the time, it would get too hot. It's only meant to be used for several hours at a time.
If you get one, be sure to use the alternate method of priming and charging the diatom powder, much easier.

i've run my xl a couple days straight or so at a time, but you don't want to run it constantly.
famman: oil the bushing, that will help. mine got cooler as it "broke in" too.
