Hi, I have 6 angelfish who are all the same "breed" they hall have similair colors. There only appears to be onbe female, i have seen her spawning and she is smaller than all the rest, there is only one pair. When I move them to the 75 I was thinking maybe i could get my hands on some more females, but i dont think i will be able to find angels like these aywhere else, will they pair up if they are different kinds? and is more than 6 too many for a 75 gallon? The smallest and darkest one is te female, i think all the rest are males.thank!

Those are some nice looking Black Marbel's. You have one pair already, is there a reason you are looking to get more angel's? Are you trying to get more pairs? Black Marbel's are pretty common among Angels, you may have to shop around to find them though. Angels will pair up with different varieties. I have had a silver with DD Black, Gold with an Albino and a Smokey with a Koi. It all depends on what you are planning on doing. If your intention is to breed angels to sell, most people tend to look for the true strain. When you start cross breeding the different varieties, you do not always end up with the exact replica's of the parents.

Most angels available readily are Pterophyllum scalare. P. altum and P. leopoldi are rarer in the hobby. The wide variety of color strains available are P. scalare and will all breed with each other. The coloration, finnage, and other differences are just decoration on the same fish P. scalare.

Size has nothing to do with angelfish sex. The only true and 100% accurate way is to see their ovipositors when they spawn.

Nalopete is correct..the only reliable method for sexing Angels is the ovipositor.

the hump on the head is NOT a reliable method as some females may develop this feature.

That's what I also thought the moment I was surprised to see that the other angels were assumed to be males.:)

angels only seldom pair up, you might have a few more females, and males but they probably just aren't compatible, angels are picky when they choose their mates

Hiya,

That is not true that angels seldom pair off. You are more likely to get pairs from stock raised together. I had a group of 7 juvies I raised last year and ended up with 3 pairs and an extra.. They are correct, the only true way of sexing an angel is when their ovipositors are down. I would just let them be and see how many pairs you get, it may take a bit. When they start to breed they will do all they can to protect the eggs and fry. At that point you may want to remove the pair OR the eggs to raise artificially. If you want to add more diversity, you can add other varieties of Angels. I dont know many who are picky about crossbreeding them. I had a gold and a black marble breed and had fry that looked just like either parent. Crossbreeding can also help strengthen them.

Good luck!

different colored angels are not different species - just different colors. black cat, white cat, tabby, calico - all the same species. if you were to buy a different species - altum, leopoldi - you would certainly know, as the price tag would not be something you'd overlook.
