We have two 40 gallon breeders that I want to convert to fish tanks and I need some help with how to do it. One of the tanks is a standard 40 breeder with no center brace and a metal screen lid. The other tank has kind of a meshy screen lid that slides into the top of the tank from the front (the kind made for reptiles). I don't know what kind of a cover to use, I have only found one and it says it's two pieces and needs a center brace. Any ideas on what to do?

Your best best with a 40B is to get two pieces of 1/4" glass cut to size. Check the measurements but 35.5" x 8" should be close. This will leave a 1.25"-1.5" gap in the back for the filter. For lighting, a simply 36" strip light will do.

I'm sure a LFS could order a full plastic fluorescent hood for you as well.

or if you're handy with DIY

You could make something like http://www.ahsupply.com/finished_enclosures.htm

I know the one tank with the sliding top is built for reptiles (it doesn't seem any thinner though) and the other currently houses four aquatic turtles and usually stays over half filled with water so I'd say that ones okay. I might just keep the one for reptiles and get some glass for the other. Thanks for your help.
