View Full Version : how many fish to fit?
how much fish can you fit into a two ft tank? i was thinking of
15 corys
10 cardinal tetras
6 neons
4 glass catfish
2 otto cats
2 guppies
and if i could one or two black knife fish
is this over crowding?
What are your full tank dimensions. And are you going to put live plants? And what sort of filtration are you using?
60cm x 33 cm x 30 cm
using OTTO's internal filter version PF400N
i was thinking of maybe a little live plants. not too much!
That's overcrowded. Mike work in a shop, but not in your house, or at least for more than a few weeks.
Try 5 cories
8 cardinals
2 ottos
2 or 3 more something else.
Or you can have the knife fish, and when they get big enough they'll sort out the overcrowding for you
how about:
2 Pygmy Corydoras
13 little baby cories about 2cm each
(then when they grow bigger i'll put them in a 4 ft tank? or give them to my friend who has a SIX ft (drools) tank? or then again by the time they grow up i'll have my own 4 ft tank?) :D
3 glass cat fish ( abt 3cm each?)
10 lamp eye tetras ( abt 1 cm each?)
6 neons ( which are already in the tank)
2 guppy
2 ottos (small baby ones too)
actually all the fishes in my lfs are really very small. that's why when people peer into my tank they exclaim how sparse( when there was 6 neons and 2 corys and 1 glass in it!) non of my fishes are about 4 cm! so when they DO grow big which i assume is not that fast? and even if it is, by the end of this year i can get either a 4 ft tank or another 2 ft tank! :D
so what do you guys think of it now? still too much?
p.s i scrapped the ghost black knife idea. too scary to think of it grabbing my poor tetras and munching it!!!
Most of those fish will probably fill out in a couple of months. Fish tend to grow up fast or else they get eaten in the wild, especially the smaller fish. You really have to take into account the adult size of these fish when getting ready to stock. You have way too many bottom feeders in that small of a tank, though at least cories are very friendly and will not fight.
TKOS : thanks for your advise! i gues i can't buy that many fish i want
i'll just stick to maybe 4 corys and my lampeye tetras along with the 6 neons and glass fish which was already in the tank.
btw, what do people mean when its overcrowding? i get this vision of many fishes in a tank bumping into one another. but what actually do you mean? do you mean there will be a bio overload or the fishes will be unhappy(if fishes have feelings beyong scared and hungry)?
Well overcrowding means many things. One of course is too much of a bio load which if not watched will result in potentially tank ending problems. But there is also the fact that every over crowded tank I have seen (for example every pet store), the fish don't react in a normal way. Aggressive fish just sit there, school fish school but tend not to swim. In my experience more space makes for more interesting fish to watch. Sure sometimes you think but this tank looks empty. Well I tend to look and say, wow look at all the room these fish have to live in. It sure is nicer to live in a house than a 1 room apartment. I find you just have happier fish that become more exciting to watch. Good luck.
TKOS : i see i see! thanks so much for patiently helping out! i really appreciate it :)
No problems. Cories are great fish and you will love them.
