I'm thinking about trading in my swordtails and getting something different. I'm just tired of trying to figure out what to do with the babies every 6 weeks. My bf keeps saying that he wants something cool. I think he means something larger and more colorful (he likes salt water fish, to give you an idea). So I'm looking for some recommendations on freshwater Cichlids that might be suitable in my 30g - inhabitants listed in my signature. I would like to keep the others in the tank, but I'm open to new ideas. Any suggestions?

you have amano shrimp in there which wil severely limit any cichlids unless you don't mind missing shrimp.
I am surprised the rams has left them alone.

that said there are only a few you could even attempt in a 30 cube as many would require more space or could be problematic with the other inhabitants.

absolutely not. nowhere near enough space...

What guidelines do you go by for Discus. I would be happy with one, or maybe two. I've read that you need 9g per 6" Discus. So why do you think there is not enough space?

If Discus won't work, are Angels my only other option? I was really looking to add something more colorful. Any other opinions or ideas out there today? I was also considering a Yellow Lab or two - any advice on that?

Discus are quite tall and have a very large surface area and therefore need more height and depth than a 30 gal would provide imo. Crowding is a common cause ofr discus loss.

It's a tall 30g. 20" tall in fact, does this change your opinion?

Discus are better in schools of 5-6, they're one of the few schooling cichlid species. I wouldnt recommend them unless you have a tank large enough for 5-6.

You can go with a couple Yellow Convicts, theyre small, and less aggressive than normal Black Convicts. Maybe some Apisto, or couple more rams, or couple of Angels.
