Feed them slices on zuchini, rubberband it to a rock so it sinks to the bottom, they'll love it, take the uneaten portion out after 48 hours and add a new slice.
I know I'm pathetic, but I work parttime at petsmart, and it's what we do with some of our African Cichlids such as the mbuna tanks.

Yes...carrots are absolutely fine for mbuna, along with zuchini, peas, spinach, romaine lettuce, etc. Use fresh veggies along with spirulina flakes and pellets for a balanced diet.

No, excess protien should not be done with Africans since their mainly herbivore which means their diet consists of mainly plant matter (zuchini, lettuce and such). Any excess protien can off their diet and cause them to bloat, and could kill them in the long run.

Through my experiences we find the mbunas love zuchini, peas, and a mixed spirulina diet they thrive on this stuff basically we keep them on the same diet as our tropheus mooris.
