Well i gave in to temptation today and bought a 3 ft (30 gal) tank that im going to setup as a vivarium. I plan on using expanding foam to make a background and cover it with coconut shell. Im going to do about 2/3 land 1/3 water with a small waterfall feature. Will be quite heavily planted if it all goes to plan.

Id like suggestions as to what type of wildlife i could put in there, bearing in mind i live in Australia and have a VERY limited choice of what i can legally obtain. I would really like one or two small lizards (maybe a type of gecko?) the only problem is that most small lizards native to australia live in the outback desert and i am going for a 'rainforest' theme with my tank.

This is what im hoping to achieve with my tank, so what kind of wildlife would you suggest to live in somthing like this ? Frogs are probally out of the question as choice is very limited in australia and as the tank will be in my bedroom noise from them would become a factor.

Are you going to catch something or buy it? Im not sure what you were planning on doing. I would go to your petstore and see what they have. I think white tree frogs are sold in Australia, thats what I would do, you could get 2-3 of them.

Be careful with mixing species. A lot of them will cause problems and often attack each other. They might be fine for awhile, then suddenly someone is missing something. There's someone on another forum that housed a Crested Gecko with a Gargoyle Gecko, one day, the Gargoyle bit the Crested's tail off. This is my influence not to house anything I am not 200% certain on together.

I would go to a few pet stores and see what they have, talk to them, write down all the things you can buy at those pet stores, then go home and research it. Most likely you will want to forget about 90% of what the pet store people say, they are just out to make a sale. I lasted 3 months in the pet store business, and couldn't deal with the crap they wanted me to sell for each animal when I knew it was wrong, they are probably glad I'm gone as they are not losing sales now.
