Hi all,

I have posted a link in the gallery section to my fotopic site which I have all my fish pics on.

I could do with a bit of help with the ID of my Cichlids though.
Have a look at my pics and if you can identify any fish, please let me know.
www.fish.fotopic.net (http://www.fish.fotopic.net)

email me direct (purpleronny200@aol.com) or through the sites.

Thanks in advance,
Lee.

Hi Nemo,

I used aquarium sand for the substrate. I got it from my local aquatics store. You can get different colours now too. It costs about 10-15gbp per bag of which 3/4 of the bag is in the tank.

I absolutely love the look that wrecked airplane gives that tank.

I need to take a few more pics of the tank, not just the fish.
If I have time I will do it later on.

nice tank :)

bubba = cynotilapia afra, perhaps Chewere or Chuanga (http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1675 or http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1732) or maybe another variant - check the other pics under afra on those links. In another of his pics he looks like a zebra http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=791

Spot pic is not so clear and I don't know what he is...perhaps another zebra.

Mahony looks like neoloamprologus sexcfasciatus; this variant http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=2241.

Custard - pseudotropheus zebra perhaps.

Wilson looks like pseudotropheus crabro http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=845 in some pics, and a zebra variant in others.

Snap - I don't know. If you disregard the eye bar he also has six bars and that might mean a neolamprologus sexfasciatus variant as well. In the main pic, if that's him in the background, he looks less black and gold and more like a sexfasciatus.

Bill is pseudotropheus elongatus for me http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=855

Bruno is a haplochromine or aulonocara species and looks female to me...perhaps a female aulonocara stuartgranti. In the main tank pic, if he's far left, he looks a little like an aulonocara baenschi.

I find ID'ing fish from pics really hard - so these are just my best guesses and are by no means definitive. Hope it gets you started anyway :)

Snap - a tilapia buttekoferi - gets huge and mean, should be ok for a while though.

Nice coler, you got most of them right.

Spot appears to be a female Greshakei.
Custard looks to be a dull male Kenyi/Lombardoi.
Bruno looks to be a stressed Male Borleyi. Seems to have lost all of his color.
As for snap, Hes not from Malawi, and hes not from Tanganyika. He is a Buttikoferi. They get huge and tend to be extremely aggressive. If I were you, I would remove him from this tank.

Thanks for the 'snap' ID tarheels - that one was really bugging me.

Hi all,
Thanks for your quick response on my pics.
Im worried now, just seen the bit about Tilapia Buttikoferi.
Did a google image search and yes, it matches up. If they can grow to about 12", will they be alright with my frontosa's?
You say they are aggressive? I have 3 .
Does it look like I may have to split the tankmates up as they grow, if so which ones are likley to need splitting?

When I get time I will look at the other comments.
Thanks,
Lee.

They are in a juwel 180 which is about 3.5ft long x15"wide x 15"high.
I dont have anything at the moment available. They are about 3/4" long at the minute.

the 180 litres (about 46 US Gallons) is going to be far to small for the frontosa and the buttikoferi...to keep them you would need something way bigger...about 70/90 or more gallons for frontosa, which despite their size are actually pretty timid aquarium fish which are easily stressed by far smaller more active/aggressive types.

I don't know how the buttikoferi would affect the front(s) (btw they prefer groups of four plus of their own kind - the fronts)

125 is minimum for a colony of Fronts.

^ I would take tarheels advice on that one - they very much do prefer to be kept in groups.
