that should be fine. what size is your jd? if he is smaller than your oscar you may have problems.

Neither of those fish should be kept in a 29g.

When will guys learn? You put cichlids in anything smaller than a 55 gallon, and display it on here,,,you're gonna get chewed up and spit out.

In my 1st tank, 2 in JD shredded a 3+ in. Tiger O. I wouldn't try it, esp. if JD is larger.

tank is too small of a single oscar. they get huge as soon as that fish gets big he will not be able to turn in that tank. as long as you do not plan to keep the fish in that tank for very long/or plan on selling them when they get older i would not put those fish in that tank.

also the O will grow ALOT faster then the JD. keep that in mind.

Seriously it gets really old hearing people critique everyone on how big a tank should be to accommodate certain fish. If you put a 2 inch oscar and a 2 inch jack in a 29 gallon tank that is fine. Just keep in mind that you will have to upgrade to a larger tank eventually.

well just so that people will stop posting this thread, the tiger oscar was brutally killed by the JD, so do not worry about that anymore. it sucked, but i knew it was ganna happen. you all told me, but i tried my luck anyways.

Is that the tank your scolofi are in currently? Did you end up taking the JD back to the store?

Man, ya'll need to take a bloody chill-pill. The guy or gal put a small JD into a 29g for a short while, I'm sure he or she knows it will need an upgrade. Good lord. Now I remember why I left.

not true at all...plenty of cichlids will be well kept in smaller tanks...apistogrammas, rams, shell dwellers & other tanganyikans, kribensis, convicts...I've seen nice 40 gallon mbuna tanks...you will not get chewed up and spit out for posting about cichlids in a smaller tank than a 55, there are plenty in this diverse family of fish that will be happy in a smaller tank.

No, I was here a while back. I left because people were becoming too pushy and intolerant of anyone who didn't go along with their beliefs. That thread was a test to see if people were still acting in such a way. I have a very healthy O in a 75g by himself ;)

75G is a decent sized home for even an adult Oscar. Its always preferable to have as much space as possible, and I'm sure the Oscar wouldn't dislike say a 500g tank, but that would be excessive. Unfortunately, a lot of people fall into a category of fish keepers who really don't have the room for a huge tank (say 100g+) and end up getting a 55g instead. The 55g tank is kinda in the grey zone of aquariums... its huge among small tanks, yet it is tiny among giant tanks. I myself own a 55g tank, as I haven't the ability to get the 125+ I'd like to own. (money isn't an issue, but I still live with my folks, and they'd prefer that I not have anything larger than I currently have.) Properly cared for, a 55g tank can be a great home for juvenile fish of most sizes, and some of us forget to consider the current size and predicament of the fish and tank in question. I myself have 3 clown loaches in my 55g tank. I've been flamed for it in the past, but people seem more cool about it nowadays. They're each 3.5-4" and to my best knowledge, are happy and healthy. I don't plan to keep them into adulthood in that aquarium... if I can't provide them with a larger environment by the time they get to be 6" each, I'll likely give them to someone I know who has a very large freshwater tank, and either get more baby clowns, or get a few more cories for my existing 5. Granted, 2 loaches, a discus, and 9 neons seems a little much for a 15g (65 liters, yes?) tank, but who's to say the poster won't take good care of them, or upgrade their tank? Yes, we've all seen the people who keep 3 baby oscars in a 10g tank and think its ok. Some of those people, when they are informed of what's going on, either sell the oscars or get a much larger tank. Some don't. Everyone wants to see the best for the fish, but lets try not to be too quick to judge?

oh.
I took your thread seriously and replied to it...a number of times. (edit: and not in a pushy or intolerant way)
I'm glad your Oscar is in a nice set-up. If I'd known that I wouldn't have bothered attempting to help a new fish owner in trouble.

I'm not trying to start a fight here, but I read through that thread about the 2 oscars in a 25g tank which you wrote a few days ago. I don't think anyone was being intolerant or pushy at all. Everyone was offering their honest opinions and trying to aid an all too familiar situation: someone's first experience with fishkeeping potentially going wrong. It is seen daily on this forum, and to my experience, everyone on this thread makes an honest effort to be very polite and helpful. (I believe Coler's responses were very well thought out and informative, as well as the advice offered by others) I'm glad to hear that you don't actually have 2 oscars in a 25g tank, but you may want to re-read what was actually said if you think people were being pushy or rude about the proper care of 2 oscars in a 25g tank that are apparently ill.

So this is the same 29g your scolofi and other small cichlids are in? :angryfire: Or do you have 2 29g tanks?

Glad to hear your experience was more positive this go around. :-) I do agree, the community has become more tolerant of certain situations and certainly more eager to help as compared to a couple years ago. :silly:

kinda harsh if you ask me.. sure its your fish, your tank, and your choice but was it really an excuse for just putting the poor things life on the line? not for food, but just to see if they can co-exist when people had been saying no?
dont get me wrong, im all for 'personal experiences' to see how things go, and im not bagging on you... but im just a bit puzzled..
Anyways, good luck on the other fish, lets hope you have no more losses, also post some pics of your tank, it looked pretty cool last time

Speak for yourself...the guy creates a thread which describes unbearable conditions for his fish in an attempt to test the tolerance of members??? What a tool. I think I'll start a thread about a 29 gallon tank with two Iranian Jocks in it. I bet nobody would care about those conditions, some might even advise me I could fit three. Hahahahahahahahaha.
