Hi all,

I should probably search out some computer forum but I feel "comfy" here, LOL.

I have this annoying message on my screen...Power Surge on Hub Port.

Now, none of my usb ports work....I can't download pics, print, etc. On top of that, my speakers quit working at the same time! I've uninstalled the USB drives and reinstalled them, restarted my computer, and reset the ports. That's about as much as my computer illiterate self can do.

Soooo, if anyone has any suggestions I would REALLY appreciate it.

Oh, I'm running Windows XP...I dunno what additional info you might need.

Thanks,
Eric

Bummer, I was afraid of that. Thanks for the input.

the million dollar question is..... are the USB ports integrated into the motherboard, or are they plugged and mounted separately?

LOL, I couldn't answer that for a million dollars! Well, I suppose I'd get off my lazy but and do some more research for that much. I'm guessinig I'd have to tear the thing apart to tell that? Then, once I did.....I'd need to be a tech to tell which was broken anyway right?

Being so close to the holidays, I have zero time to take my comp in to the tech shop. It's a sad life not being able to print, download pics from my camera or info from my GPS or hear my speakers (which aren't on a USB port btw)!

It's a crappy emachine if that tells you what setup is like.

If its an eMachine, then yes, they are integrated on the motherboard and not removable or swappable...the easiest suggestion would be to ask a local computer shop to fit a "PCI Usb Port Card"..This will then give you the facility of USB back which you can then simply plug in a 4 or 6 port USB hub which are very cheap to buy these days..

You're in luck, my design company is in the same office building as my friends tech shop is. I go both ways, design and also do tech stuff on the side. Now installing that PCI USB Card as atnixon mentioned, is very easy.

Open up the computer, find one of the open PCI slots at the lower half of the motherboard (the main big square board with all the chips and what not on it). There are usually at least 3, and if you take the PCI USB Card out you'll see how it will fit in.

You do that, push it gently but firmly into place, then boot the computer up, it will say you found new hardware, insert the CD, then select you have the disk, have it search your CD rom drive, and that's it.

You can get them anywhere really, Best Buy, Circuit City, Target and Walmart (maybe unsure as to those...

If you need any other help feel free to pm me! =)

WOW! Thanks a lot everyone! I'll try the "PCI usb hub port card" as soon as possible!
