I bought some fluorite substrate and on the bag it said rinse before putting into aquarium. I rinsed the substrate for an hour and the brown stuff would not rinse out. It also said on the bag the brown dust would settle after 2-12 hours, so i put the substrate in my tank and filled it up. It is still brown after 48 hours. It looks like sewage. I dont know if i should call the LFS and tell them or what? Any suggestions?

rinse out the filter media in aquarium water, dust off and plants or decorations, do a gravel vacuum/ water change. repeat weekly. eventually the water will clear. after the water is clear if the flourite is disturbed the water will have to settle again.

:D

I am not going to discredit something I have never used, but I cannot see spending money on so called plant substrates unless you are making money doing so. I use plain sand with ferts and co2 and throw away more plants in one week than I have ever bought. To me, the "miracle" substrate is something to sell. They are better, I am sure, but I have the best success with just plain sand. Like anything though, it really doesn't matter what you use as much as giving things time to settle in and balance out. Patience is what it takes to make a nice tank. I am sure someone will argue this point, but I like my tanks to be as natural as I can make them and the more natural they are, they less care they take....Just my 2 cents (oooops, 4 cents. the dollar went way up)

fluorite should not be used as your entire substrate. it is possible to give too much nutrients to your plants, and this does so. fluorite should only be used sparingly. Mix a small amount in with your substrate or roll it into small balls placed in your substrate around the root of the plants.
