Switching my 10 gal. to sand today! ?'s

I'm trying it out in my 10 gal. to see how I like it before I get a big tank and commit to buying 100 lbs of the stuff. :-) Anything I should know or do? I've put my fish in a 5 gal. with the same filter running for the time being because I know they can't go in the new tank till the sand settles down. About how long should I keep them in the 5?

Is it okay to not run a filter for now on the 10 while the sand settles in the water? I'll be putting my live plants and ornaments in there.

you dont need to run a filter until your sand settles down.

running the filter while there is still sand floating around in the water can acctually severly damage it.

it shouldnt take to long for the sand to settle though.

and make sure to make the filter intake high enough so it doesnt suck up any sand.
