Where did you get your rock? Off a fellow reefer? Most of it looks like homemade rock (rock structures created by humans and seeded by live rock). All the reef rock I have seen isn't as round and has more holes. Homemade rock isn't bad, but you want to make sure it was established in a saltwater system long enough to gather beneficial bacteria and organisms. Half of it does show some nice coloring, which is a good sign that it was in a marine system for a while.
I got it from someone's fish only tank. Half the rock came out of his tank and the other half was dry. I didn't realize how much different it looked from most marine tank rock until I started trying to find out more about setting up the tank.
What do you mean by homemade? Like synthetic rock? or just like regular rocks you would find laying about?
Is this going to do the job? I would like soft corals eventually. Thanks!
Some DIY rock is just fine, and as Feather mentioned it can become inhabited with life as well. If it were me, I'd add at least one really nice piece of natural live rock and then use the better pieces of what you have now to scape with.
I would as Grins has said suggest adding one good piece of live rock to help seed them. Other than that they will eventually become decent live rock. In time they should be filled with life. For me part on the fun of setting up a new tank is seeing the life forms start to grow and encrust the live rock, such as coraline algea, amphiapods, ect.
