recently after moving my tank (same tank they were in before) my convicts (as they usually do) spawned...this time, however, the fry are getting much bigger in the tank than they normally do, as they are normally eaten by other fish

tankmates include a 3" Jack dempsey, 3" male convict, 2" female convict

what happened, was that I noticed that her tail has been completely bitten off, but she was still swimming, the fins on her sides were shredded up a little too

the tank is a 75g, the male and female have NEVER had any problems before, they've always defended the fry together, like a team...I've also never had problems with the Jack before....could it be that now that he's not smaller than the others (the jack was introduced months after the cons were and he was much smaller, but since he'll eventually be much bigger, he seems to be growing faster, so now he's the same size as the male)

when I watch the tank, I see nothing out of the ordinary, just the jack being chased away from the fry

I moved her to a 20g tank where she is by herself so that she can heal up...I realise this is a 99 cent fish, but she has a lot of sentimental value and she is very colorful and beautiful

please help if possible

I can't understand your story, did the jack get chewed up or the female convict?

If it was the female con that got beaten up, I would probbaly point the finger at the male con...it is probably ready to breed again and the female isn't.

yes, the female got beat up, there isn't a scratch on the male or the jack

that is what is confusing me, because she's never been abused to this extent come breeding time...her tail is literally gone

I would lean toward Darth's hypothesis. Although it is possible she had a tangle with the dempsey while defending her fry, and lost.
