They're doing OK, they're just hiding. I know they're shy and I think maybe I need to add more hiding places to my tank. How do you balance the need for open space and the need for hiding spots? I attached a picture of my tank to my intro so I'll link it here:

Currently there are 4 dwarf gouramis (2 male and 2 female...we shall see how that plays out) and 5 zebra danios. We are considering pearl gouramis, glass catfish and african dwarf frogs in the future. I know I need to get some plants that are tall enough to give the frogs a place to rest near the surface. Any suggestions? I'm not brave enough to try live plants yet and definately don't have the necessary lighting.

Let me also add that they've ONLY been in the tank since Sunday evening so I know they need more time to settle as well. I just want to make sure we're doing whatever we can for them to feel at home.

I'd add a couple tall plastic plants in the corners and give them some time to acclimate to your tank. Nice setup.

nice tank :)

I would do something on the right hand side either :

a) similar but not identical to the left side - some tall plants, and some smaller ones in the foreground

b) nice piece of driftwood focused on the right hand side, maybe moving the rocks slightly over towards the left side...a great piece of wood would maybe arch over the rocks from the right hand side, with lots of nooks/crannys/ways to weave in and out etc...more tall than long.

by right hand side I mean as we look at the pic, i.e. the one without the tall plants.

edit : presuming your water is 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, low nitrates, I would agree the gourami probably just need some more time to settle in.

There was some ammonia in there :( between 0 and .6 according to the test kit. I'm guessing this is a spike due to adding 4 new fish, changed 20% and will test again later. Bummer.

I would skip the pearl gouramis. The tank is already at its basic capacity with the stock you have.

Gouramis, and other labyrinth fish are often shy at first. Plus I would think they aren't a fan of the danios.

Lots of plants is key for gouramis.

Keep it natural.

Add some more cover and give them some time. The danios could be stressing them a bit, but they should all settle down in the end.

I wouldn't add any ADFs to your tank. Usually people don't put them in anything more than a 30g, for safety (and visibility) issues. I've found the ones I've had to be incredibly stupid, and 4 of the 6 I had in my 30g drowned, even after repeatedly netting them to the surface and on top of floating plants and logs.

How are 5 glofish and 4 dwarf gouramis completely stocking a 40g

Ahhh crap, I must have been half brain dead and assuming more fish than had been stated. Maybe when i typed that I already assumed the glass cats and stuff were there. Good point. And nice catch as my brain dead moments are rare when I am writing. Plenty when talking...just not many when writing. :)

hmm lets think here, how can i add hiding spaces? duhh logs, caves, lots of plants and rocks can accomplish this. what if you had to live in this tank, and were shy of the giant things that put threw you in there, you would want lots of interesting hiding spaces and clever tank setups
