I am thinking about putting a wall of live rock behind the red line in my tank. The space that I would use is about 6 inches by 30 inches. I want to place the rock all of the way against the back wall though. Is that okay to do? I am trying to keep the full front area open to enable me to have a larger swimming area for my fishies... I was just uncertain as to the rules of live rock and placing them against the wall.

You can place it however you like. It is really up to personal preference. However you do want to consider having good areas for your fish to swim around in the rock etc. From my understanding of how live rock works with filtration wise you want to have good water flow through the live rock.

I have seen many different types of aquascaping so I think as long as you have good flow through it and aren't causing dead spots where detirus could build up it would be fine.

I agree with above.
But it also depends on the fish, some fish don't like swimming out in the open and prefer to swim in and around the live rock (eg dwarf angelfish, hawkfish, blennies). Those fish would spend much of their time staying near the rock and would benefit from more scattered rock. Whereas other fish (eg tangs, chromis, cardinalfish) would do well in a live rock arrangement like you've drawn because as you said they would have more room to swim freely. Just a thought to consider.

Thanks ! I will consult the group once my tank is ready to add some fish. I think I will place the rock in the back with a little room for water flow behind it. I also will place a few larger peices of rock on the other side too. Once my rock is placed (2 Months) I will submit a new pic and seek advice.

Good advice allready given you may want to use a marine epoxy to secure some of these rocks so that they dont topple over depending on the height of your wall of course. Its also really handy to create some ledges within the rock work should you want to place corals or whatever within your wall.
