Hi all! I have a 29 gallon that has been running for a while now but now I want to make it planted because I dont like the bare-bottom look

I want to make a planted tank with my baby german blue rams living in there

-Are Rams compatible with plants?
-Where can you find good looking pebbles, stones, and rocks?
-Should I use regular gravel or flourite?
-What plants are suitable for the 29 gallon?

I want to try to get the rams to breed one day so any plants that could be part of its natural habitat would be great

Also,

-What equipment do I need?

Thanks!

PS (Yes MFK memebers I posted the same thread on MFK but I decided to post it here because I know that aquaria is more into plants than MFK)

Rams love a planted tank. Regular aquarium gravel or sand will work just fine. I get my rocks from garden centers, slate is a good choice. Some driftwood would be nice too.

Plants would depend on the amount of light.

since it would be 2 watts per gallon, I could just use regular compact flourescent lights?

Could I just buy 100 watt bulbs from home depot and just place them over the tank?

and I need co2, and diffuser?

for fertilizers and co2... what can I do?
What are good types to buy?

How many 100 watt bulbs should be enough to cover the tank?

i think that how you dose may depend more on how heavily planted and what plants you have. Thats my opinion at least... So, i would start there....

and just a thought, but I don't really know anything about this... is it ok to dose with baby fish?? how "baby" are your rams?

ummm they are 1 inch in size and relly small.. like goldfish feeder size I guess

I am not so sure for plants right now... whatever catches my eye I presume

Everyones feedback is very useful regarding your question Richard. I should add that you should let us know if you have decided doing a low tech plant setup or going the high tech route, with high powered lighting and co2.

It's really a big difference, in price and maintenence. A lot of research needs to be done, you can't just jump in, or you surely will drown! :(

When you drown, the money just floats out of your pockets! hehe :)

Low tech you could do on a 29 for about, 40$. That would be a grow light, some tin foil around the reflector to give off more light, some plant grow fertilizer once a week or two weeks.

High tech, you can easily get close to a few hundred dollars or more, pretty quickly.

There are a lot of good links here on the forum explaining all the differences between the two and what recommendations are by seasoned veterans. You should search around.

I have been searching around the stickies and threads but I cant make english out of them hehe.

I was thinking small plants for now.. like small leaves and mosses? its for my rams

I'd go with a low tech setup for now, see how you like it, then you can always upgrade to high tech in the future. You can get a lot of good info from www.plantgeeks.com

Hope this helps you! :)
