I have an eheim 2217 up and running but I've been thinking about the cleaning and I've realized the media isn't in a bag or anything so I think it might be difficult. Do you have the media like bio balls in a filter bag or something to make cleaning easier, and how should I go about cleaning it the first time to not get the media everywhere. I've been looking at these filter bags perhaps to put the media in for easier cleaning http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=13961&Nty=1&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=All&pc=1&N=0&Ntt=filter%20bag&Np=1

Also do you have any good links for a step by step guide for cleaning a canister filter, I've been looking a little but couldn't find one.

buying a pair of stocking would be cheaper then the bag from ol Doc fosters.

swishing the media in a bucket of tank water, enough to get rid of any clog, is what i do.

rrogan - I myself just picked up a cheap pair of used 2213's, so I've been reading up on cleaning. I like bkw's suggestion of swishing the media container around in a tank water bucket. I think that pantyhose might be too fine to use in that manner though. It might clog up faster than you'd like.

I've also read about people stopping the filter, putting it in a large bucket and popping off the inflow line. Water then rushes down the outflow line and flows out the lower spout, hopefully "backflushing" waste into the bucket.

There's a huge thread from somewhere else that's a big cleaning read for canisters. It's probably bad form to post a link to other forums, but if I get the ok from a mod I'll do it.

Actually the mesh bag that Doc foster sells is the same size as panty hose.

Most media that is sold can be replaced with normal house hold items, why spend the money for shipping when u can raid ur moms/girlfriends/wifes stash of panty hose for free.

alright thanks, i'll probably end up putting just the bio balls in the some stockings, since the first chamber is supposed to catch larger stuff and I can just dump it out without them mixing.

This won't be much help right now, but I always ran my eheims with sponges over the intakes. The sponges got cleaned weekly and the canisters were rinsed out every few months or so. With this set up, they were never dirty enough to need more than a swish in a bucket and the junk got removed from the tank before it decomposed.
