I came home from work today to find one of my bronze cories upside down, dead. He's had what looked like a bit of a bloated belly the last few days, but it's been really hard to tell if it was actually bloated or if I was imagining things. He's quite a bit smaller than the other bronze cories (that I bought all at the same time), which may have suggested health problems from the start.

Any thoughts as to what might have happened? Everyone else seems fine, levels are 0/0/0, and ph is within the normal range. He was eating just fine last night, too.

Only changes are the recent addition of DIY CO2, but there's no indication of O2 starvation, and some zucchini in there, which my pleco (and all of my cories, in fact) love.

Sad.. :(

I'm really sorry. I know I would be heartbroken If I ever lost one of my cories. I hope the others are ok. good luck in finding out what happened.

Thanks hope4peace... I've had a lot of bad luck with cories lately, which is making me sad. These guys have seemed to really fluorish, though, I have tried to do everything I can. I hope this is just a case of nothing I could have done, and that my other guys will be okay.

Oh no! So I wake up this morning to another dead cory floating on the top!! This little guy seemed pale last night before I went to bed, compared to the others, but otherwise was hanging out with everyone and eating just fine.

What's going on?? This happened before to my last group of cories, although some of them were covered in weird spots (2 of 5), and within 48 hours they were all dead. None of these guys have spots or anything... just one looked a little bloated, and this latest little guy was a bit pale. Again levels are fine (as above) and the cories are behaving normally.

Ugh :(

if they are bloated try not feeding for a day or two then feed peas if they will eat them. (dont know if they will) I don't really know what to tell you. I'm so sorry :(

None of the other ones are bloated, and they've been eating zucchini, which I imagine would be sufficiently fibrous. I won't feed them for a couple days, though, and give them some peas and see if that helps. The one I found dead this morning definitely wasn't bloated, though... just the first poor guy.

Ack, so frustrating. :(

(Thanks for your replies, hope..)

Hmm, reading a bit about it, that certainly could have been the cause. I wonder where they picked it up from, though? Could it have been the zucchini in my tank?

I know how sensitive cories are to medication, should I try isolating them and medicating them, or just wait to see how my remaining ones fair? I understand it's not particularly contagious, and the remaining ones are much bigger and presumably hardier. I won't be able to check till I get home later tonight how they are doing...

*fuss*

I'm leaving for Australia in a week and my parents are going to be fish sitting... now I want to stay home to look after my fish! *sigh*

Poor cories....

Are the fish new? If so it could be stress or a disease they already had when you bought them.

They like their water at room temp., I'd add a bubbler to get more oxygen in and do a water change. These are things I automatically do if I spot trouble in a tank. The fact that they're still eating is a good sign. Do they have lots of hiding spots? - caves etc... I just stack pieces of slate just high enough so they can fit in and have some castles which they don't go into but can lay beside or behind. Just things to help them feel more secure. Put some floating plants in to shade the tank. You could try googling bacterial infections and see if that helps you spot the problem. Good luck and have a nice trip. Australia has always been a place I'd love to visit.

I really don't like the idea of "room temperature" as this could be anything. what if someones "room temp" was 50? or 90?

good temp range for cories 77-80F
