Could you tell us anything about your tank? (size, filtration, substrate, plants?, fish, inverts?)
Pictures would be great.
Also, what powerhead is it?

Usually you direct it to give more surface agitation or to create more flow in low flow areas....like behind decor or corners....

I place mine anywhere I need to so it's output is heading towards a dead spot or low flow area.

The majority of mine, though, drive RUGF, so there are very few low flow areas with the constant flow from below.

i put mine where my undergravel filter tubes are sitting. i just place them on top of the tubes and direct them towards the front of my tank. my cichlids love swimming in the current.
