I'm considering a cichlid tank and I plan on having
3 Pundamilia nyererei (7.7 cm, 3 in mature)
3 Pseudotropheus demasoni (pombo) (6.3 cm, 2.5 in mature)
And I was wondering what is the minimum size tank that I should get. Thanks for any advice. I've seen people quote 5 gallons per fish (30 gallons). But I'd like to hear some advice from real people?

Also what is the largest cichlid that could be kept with a 2.5 inch species without causing too much harassment to the smaller species? Because I know I would like to keep these two species, and I would like to add, but many of my next choices would be larger (4.4 in, 5.0 in).

Thanks.

Edit: I was thinking 55, based on some of the tanks I've seen this seems large, but a smaller bioload is never bad, and perhaps I would add another 3 fish?

Well first, those two species get larger than you indicated (max size for both is approximately 4 inches). The demasoni is compatible with most other mbuna species (though avoid those which resemble it). 55gal is the minimum tank size to go with if adding more mbuna.

Demasoni are highly conspecific aggressive and don't do well in small groups (consider 12-15 to be the minimum quantity in the tank for more than one of this species). Keeping 4 or 8 will result in casualties (and lower their quantity which will promote more casualties). If you're set on getting demasoni, plan on getting a bunch of them (or a single one).

These two species belong to different groups of african cichlids and have opposing dietary needs (though a high quality food can probably be provided to support both).

When buy a tank for any kind of fish, always get the biggest tank for your budget. Many make the mistake of getting a small tank, then getting a bigger one, etc...
Just get the biggest one possible. Even if your fish are small they will have more room, the time to take care of a small tank or a big one is the same. Good luck

"Just get the biggest one possible."

Good advice, whatever your wallet and space can allow, use it. All of it. You wont' be sorry you did later down the line, because you'll only kick yourself if you don't.
