View Full Version : WOW!!! (???)
Well now for an update on the missing lionfish scenario. I have not seen it in 8 days and i have done one PWC amid the disappearance occuring (3 days ago). i got my ammonia test back and tested twice, and both times ammonia was ZERO.
now, my pygmy angel has now disappeared! i have not seen it for 2 days now (since i tore the tank apart looking for the lionfish!
could my lionfish have eaten my pygmy angel? i mean i can imagine it, but the lionfish was really small and i doubt it could eat the angel, which was the exact same size as the lion (minus the lion's fins)
either way, if i've had 2 fish die, my ammonia is staying put at 0; not even a hint of it. this is indeed bizarre, as i have checked the exterior of the tank MULTIPLE TIMES and have not found any dead fish ANYWHERE.
thoughts at all? my mind has been blown...

:joe:Alien abduction ..... only way to explain it!
Nah, they have to be hiding in your cave network. Have you looked behind your tank? My stand has a a little ledge the could hide a suicide jumper.
Hope you find both of them soon.....
nah that's what i meant, that i looked all around the backside and exterior of the tank. not a trace of either the lionfish or my angel! i just have it on a metal stand so i can easily see around every part of the tank.
not a trace of either fish but i'll let you know if the angel comes back (at this point, after 2 days of not seeing my most active fish it doesn't seem like too good of a sign!)
I'd be putting a cam on that tank

Big Brother is going to commend you for this, Grins.:wall:
I'm thinking one of the tabloid sites would buy the video footage.

my guess is they have to be hiding somewhere in the LR but it does seem wierd that they are both MIA and the lion for so long...

After reading your other thread, I think you have have an unwanted assassin hiding in the rock...
Sneak up on the tank after the lights have been out for awhile, and see if anything unexpected is making an appearance.

JROS, There be one or two things here for it not make any sence that if the fish are healthy and happy, they would appear before you. So it be either one or two things here, the fish aren't really happy of their new surroundings and are simply hiding away until death knocks at their door, or you have an eel that you not mentioned to anyone as yet. The other thing is that a lionfish when very hungry would and could feed themselves to death by over feeding, they not know their limits. But this lion could had if the angel was near to equal its size, the lion could still eaten the angelfish. Also, this is a slim possibility that if the lionfish did eaten the angel, that the angelfishes spines did some serious damage to the lionfish.
All of above could be wrong, I hope it is>

Odd ball questions.. Do you have a lid on your tank? And do you have a cat or other pet?
Fish jumps out of tank.. Dog/cat/sibling pick up said fish and eats/plays/flushes it?

i feel sorry for anything that would play with a lionfish....when i had one a few years ago i was terrified to stick my hand in the tank haha

any updates??
i feel sorry for anything that would play with a lionfish....when i had one a few years ago i was terrified to stick my hand in the tank haha
I wouldn't be surprised if someone got stung with a painful inflammation.:lipssealedsmilie: I had a lionfish but I would never stick my hand in a tank containing it.:perv:
my pygmy angel has not returned
it could not have jumped, i have not seen it anywhere on the ground in front, behind the tank, or in the surrounding areas. nothing!
it's gotten worse now though; 2 of my featherduster worms are gone now as well!
i have been checking in the middle of the night VERY periodically! i have not found any nocturnal predators. the only thing i ever see is my black brittle star (which seems to be looking a little bit bigger, maybe could have eaten dead fish remains?)
should i use a fish trap and see if i can catch anything interesting? i have a feeling that my starfish is not the culprit (black brittle star) but you never know
so weird

That would be possible.

Hmmm..That would be interesting to try. My worry would be if you have other creatures, they might end themselves in the trap. You haven't answered other people's questions. The more details you can provide about your tank's surroundings, the better.

My guess: Large Mantis, small hole in rock...

hmmmmm. a mantis is a possibility. do you hear clicks? ever?
scan your rock work with a flashlight and as the deranged alpacha suggested, look for holes in your rock work.
it could also be a big crab.
or you got some funk in your water (WHAT are your nitrites, trates, and phos readings?)
what are you using for top off and WCs?
your fish could be dying, and then being consumed by brittle stars and bristle worms etc.
got my water tested:
ammonia: 0
nitrites: 0
nitrates: 10
phosphate: 0
i've talked to people at various local fish shops and they all seem to agree that it may be a mantis shrimp.
one suggested dipping certain cavernous pieces of live rock in fresh water to disrupt the mantis shrimp, they will supposedly shoot out of there
i'm not going to do that until i look into it more, but what do you guys think i should do?

you're goin huntin homeboy! (not to kill, but remove...) go look at the mantis thread i just posted.
So. HAVE YOU HEARD ANY LOUD CLICKING NOISES??!?!?!:D
thats only effective for 1 type of 2 species of mantis. rocks with holes are a good bet. but... you might be chasing a large crab or somethin too.
traps. traps are a darn good bet. starve your tank, which sounds fishless.... (sorry man that sux.)
then figure a DIY or buy a trap and git-ir-done. (sorry, but i have no good trap links. man im sorry. but! we do have fellow reefers wink  wink)
