Why are you wanting to add sugar??

I have no idea. I figured, if corals like it, why not.

I've heard that adding sugar can help to cycle a tank but I've not read anything that would encourage me to try it.

I am sorry but if you dont know why you are adding something and what it will do you should not be adding it. I have read why it is added just like why Vodka is added but that is way above me and I am not willing to try it.

Reminds me a bit of the theory behind dosing Vodka.

i don't think adding vodka is the same a adding sugar. i head adding sugar will give corals a boost and hey show better color and it's good for the immune system of fish and corals in general.

I'd be interested in reading up on it. Do you have a suggestion for where to start?

There was a thread over on RC about Italian SPS tanks and they were dosing vodka and HGH along with some other things and if I remember the vodka was to help boast the biological filtration and the HGH was to get the corals to feed more aggresively that way they could feed very heavy and force faster growth to there SPS's. That was what i gathered from the thread but not something I want to try.

Sounds like it might have based on the reefkeeping article I linked to above.

i think that vodka might would work because of tons of sugar in it, but adding alcohol is what i would worry about

I'm not advocating using vodka or sugar. I'm suggesting the theories behind dosing each are similiar.

I will say that the Italian tanks are very impresive but when it comes to my corals I think I am going to listen to Eric B.

Archer I've told this story once before but it fits in this thread. Kip, the tank owner in the 2nd link I made earlier in the thread shared a story once where he dosed the vodka twice in the same night (I think he might have been sampling it that night himself). Anyhow, in a panic he did the best thing he could think of to counteract the overdose...he peed in the tank.

Hmmm... how did he know the right pee to vodka ratio? What if he overdosed on pee? Would he add more vodka? It would be a never ending cycle of pee and alcohol.

Anyways, in regards to the thread. I would research more about adding sugar. Its an interesting concept, but I would look for other alternative to improve your tank.

I had heard that story before. I didn't realize it was Kip though.

Urban Legends of Fish Keeping... Someone should write a book.

lol, yes it was Kip. If a poster I didn't know had done it I'd have probably gasped but with Kip I just laughed.

I'll stick to coral frenzy instead of vodka, sugar and pee!!!

Where is your sense of adventure?

Down the toilet with the pee!!!

Back to topic - I really don't see the need to add things to a tank that isn't found in the natural environment. To me, the enjoyment of having a reef aquarium is watching it flourish and I'd rather do that as naturally as possible in the corals own time.

At the very least I'd not add anything until thoroughly understanding why and the pros and cons as well as having a method to test.

Dosing sugar, vodka adds a carbon source that is meant to stimulate bacterial growth to aide in cleaning the water of nutrients. Bad idea! no, very bad idea!

For one, if you have to resort to dumping in such things, that should be a warning that your system and/or its maintenance needs a closer look.

Please take the time to read this.
