Is this light adequate for my reef set up?

Hi, I'm setting up a 46 gallon bowfront reef tank. I have this light:

One 175W mogul base metal halide (6500k)
Two 29w 24" actinic T12

I'm planning to keep a wide range of corals. Is this light adequate for my set up?
Thanks for answering

hey there...What is the length of the tank? if it is, then you want to be looking at getting two of the halide lamps. One lammp is good for 2 feet of tank length. Yes, you could use only one in a central position, but you well be ending up adding corals to central portion of the tank where the light is as there will be low light area's at each end of the tank. If you have two, the light is spread across the full length of the tank..you will be able to keep a good range of coral under that type of halide lamp

Bulb wise, i would switch the bukb to a 14,000k bulb as this is more white with some blue mixed in..Bulbs are personal preference though..The actinics are only there to promote the visual appearance of the corals..

Just my opinion

Actually, arguably, 6500k is the best spectrum for coral growth, and when supplemented with actinic, gives a nice blue color.

I did say 'arguably', didn't I? ;)

Well..the tank is 36" long...and my budget is pretty tight. I was fortunate to get this light for cheap...therefore, i won't be able to upgrade my light any time soon...Guess I'll have to place my corals at the centre of the tank then...:( :(

Yeah, no big deal. Try sticking mushrooms and zoos around the outside of the light and more demanding corals in the middle.

My tank is 30" long, and I use the same 175w. It's not quite as bright on the outskirts as in the middle, but I have xenia growing up the glass on one side and a kenya tree and some mushrooms/zoos on the other.

Most of the time your rock doesn't go all the way to each end of the tank anyway.

I think you'll be really happy with your setup if you take a little care in your coral placement.

:)
