Does anyone have suggestions on what to put in a new 55g cichlid tank. I am setting it up for Tanganyika, but from what I see online the Malawi have much better color. I am looking for fish options.
I prefer Lake Tanganyikan cichlids more than Lake Malawi cichlids.;) Some julidochromis or shelldwellers make a nice community in your tank.:)

I believe you could also keep some Cyprichromis (non-Jumbos) in a 55g with the fish that Lupin suggested. :) The males are very pretty.
I have heard that the behaviour of Tanganyikans can outweigh their lack of color. There are some gorgeous Tangs though, but most need larger tanks.

Yep^^^
Start out with 3-4 shellies (they will breed and colonize)
a pair of julies (also easy breeders ;))
possibly 6-8 non-jumbo cyps...they are harder to find especially locally and are exspensive...also pretty fragile when introduced to a tank or try some rainbows
i'm doing a malawi community tank. how many fish sould i put in a 75 gal. and any ideas of what to mix please the less aggresive malawi's!!!

Which species are you getting? The mbunas or aulonocaras? You can't mix both as they have different dietary requirements. Also, be sure to specify which species you like best. Yellow labs are very mild-mannered but if you are sure to stick with mbunas, do provide them foods with high fiber content. Avoid bloodworms and meaty foods for mbunas as excessive proteins cause bloat which is quite difficult to treat and something you will not want to experience.
Good luck.:)

eb462 I'd suggest starting a new thread......this one isn't about Malawians. ;) You'll get more responses in your own thread.
jpappy: Thats the stocking I was going to go for when I was turning my 55g Malawi tank into a Tanganyikan tank. That project has been put on hold though.
Cyprichromis are beautiful fish. :) And Shellies have awesome personalities.
