I have not heard anything about those but I just want you to realize what 1,000W will cost you to run. 16Hr/day = 16kWhrs/day. Look on your bill to see what you pay for a kilowatt-hour (kWhr).

I am in a bad place to by power but that would cost me about 16 x 0.25$/kWhr x 30(days) = $120/month! or 1,400/year!!

It will also be the equivalent of having a plug in heater running all the time. Would this heat up your room?

You're mileage may vary.

This is the unit they sell at my lfs, are the watts a good thing? Would it be easy to make a unit with the same lights myself for less money, my brother is i light tech in theater so he would help me.

If you have a canopy you should be able to do a DIY alot cheaper I think oh and you dont need anythig more than 175 watt halides on a tank that short at least IMO

ok thanks just the halides or should i have some t5s as well?

I was just saying that you dont need 250 watt halides I would still go with some actinic's for dawn and dusk and that could be PC, T-5 or VHO, if it was me I would probably go with VHO's for actinics I think you get better color with VHO's but that is JMO

ok thanks just was not sure this would be my first salt water tank and have many questions still to be answered.

Well you are starting out right by getting the proper lighting the first time around. Have you considered just running all T-5's ??

i was going to have clams and anemones so i was thinking the halides would be better do u think it could be done with all t5s?
