View Full Version : Cycle question: using shrimp, then adding LR

I am going to start my cycle this weekend on my 72g tank. My plan is to add a few decent sized shrimp (not sure how many, 4 maybe?). I also want to add live rock, but will not be able to do that for between 4 and 10 days.
Will adding the LR stall the cycle started by the shrimp? Will it be better to get the live rock in there sooner to help with the cycle, or later after the ammonia spike (in hopes the spike doesn't kill off too many living organisims).
Thanks for the help!

if I were you I would wait to start the cycle until you have all the rock you plan on going into the tank. One shrimp bought from the supermarket will do fine

The higher the ammonia spike, the better.

I left a couple of shrimp in for about a week and then added the rock. Ammonia disappeared two days later, nitrites just a couple of days after that. It seemed to really accelerate my cycle.

But my rock had very little visible life to lose. If it's high quality rock with lots of life, I'd probably would have waited until the spike began to recede.

If the LR is uncured you can put it in to help cycle but like Sonic said if its cured then you might want to wait. I like to use uncured, its should be cheaper and it will help with the cycle. Plus you will get to watch the rock come to life.
