I had pretty much decided on doing a fishless cycle with just a bit of live rock to get my bacteria started. My intent was to have my biological filter in my cannisters, like I did in my planted tank. I have read on here that it is better to let the live rock (in the reef tank) act as the biological filter bed. I can see that, but it raises the question of how to cycle the tank. If I cycle my tank with lots of live rock, won't that kill all the cool stuff on it? If I try to cycle my tank with the biological bed in my cannisters, and then try to transfer it to my live rock, after the cycle is complete, won't that cause ammonia and nitrite spikes and damage the rock also? Any discussion would be appreciated.
