I just purchased a used 27 gal hex tank with all the filtration, heater, lights and pumps for cheap off craigslist. Now that I have it I have no idea how to set it up???
I was thinking either a wannabie saltwater with Malawi Cichlids, pool filter sand and some plants? This is a weird tank to set up since it's taller than wide. I don't want to setup and have to redo it a few months down the road. I have some pretty coral I was thinking about using with those bright yellow and blue Malawi Cichlids but I fear high tank maintenance b/c of cleaners will get picked on? What do I do for a low maitenance hex tank w/ the bright blue and yellow Malawi labs? Tanx in advance for your advice is greatly appreciated, oh I'm in Chicago were the ph is perfectly neutral, and I have already 2 auqascaped species tanks but miss the activity of Malawi Cichlids....:help:

Thats not big enough for Malawians. :) The shape is bad as well....Malawians need long tanks.

I agree. Tangs, on the other hand, would be fine :)

yep, neolamprologus multifaciatus is a shell dwelling cichlid from lake tanganyika by the way...they have great personalities :)

african cichlids need more surface area than height.

The hex has a really small footprint (bad for malawis).

I would do a Tanganyikan tank. A group of shelldwellers and a Calvus.

:topic: No intention to steal the thread, but since Multis have been recommended I was hoping someone could recommend a source to purchase the multis from. I'm currently trying to find some after having set up a species only tank. Thanks!

Have you tried aquabid?

I've kinda kept an eye on aquabid. However, they tend to be a little pricey so I've held off. Paying $20 a fish plus outrageous shipping hasn't been very appealing. That will be a last resort. LoL
