I am going to try the lights out method to try and kill the algae in my tank. How long should I have lights off for? And do I need to cover the sides to keep any light from going in? And will the lack of lights hurt the plants? Sorry for all the questions, but I never done it before.

When I did it, it was four days. Definitely put towels over the entire tank so no ambient light will get in.

My plants were fine but YMMV.

For four days the plants should be fine, its a total blackout no peeking and not a drop of light, the blackout is very good at ridding a tank of blue green algae but not so good with other algae.

I got rid of hair algae and diatoms.

What about cynobacteria (bga)?

Same deal?
