if there is not threat, they don't need it, however do like to eat the infusoria that grows on the moss.
Right (as long as they have somewhere to hide & stuff to hang onto/eat).
Najas grass, most or all mosses, driftwood w/ some nooks & crannies, very porous rocks etc. all work at least somewhat.

Necessary? I agree with most people and say no, but it's such an easy to care for plant that I would go for it. I have a huge ball in my Dwarf Crayfish tank. They climb all over it and it helps with the bioload. Plus it gives a little shielding from the light.
you could make a moss wall so its more containted or trying using something like a hairnet to anchor it down.
