hi everyone.

ive kept fish before, breed angels, and kept discus for a while but stopped around my senior year of high school( got a offer for my setup i couldnt refuse)
well anyways im now in my freshman year of college(only 2 year). ive gotten a apartment for my 2nd year of college that allows fish tanks, so im starting my research now. so i have a couple questions.

first, i had oscars before and loved them to death, but ive decided to try something a bit more pleasing to the eye, dont get me wrong i loved me without end but the first comment i always got, was man that this is one big ugly fish:silly:, from a personailty point of view how to the jacks compare?

second, how long would a baby(1-2inch) JD do well in a 29, i would like to get a baby and keep it at school with me, but the largest im allowed is a 29, i have a 75 sitting at home that it would be moved into as soon as it outgrew the 29, it will be the only fish in the tank, unless i see its skiddish then i may get a few dither fish to make it feel better till its larger. but how long would you give it till it outgrows the 29, ill be in the apartment rougly 7-8 months, and then im done with college. off course if at anytime i see he's getting to large for the 29 i can move him to the 75 within 30minutes.

and finally, ive looked at the blues and the regulars, and from reading sounds like the blue is more fragile but also grows slower, i keep my tanks spotless and clean(something i got from keeping discus) and usually run a oversized canister filter on my tanks as well. are the blues real fragile, or is it just in poor conditions? should i keep with the regular dempsey, if so is their traights i can look for, for a individual that will have real nice color on them?

thanks for your help

the 29 would last a couple months maybe.. provided you kept it very clean and kept up with your weekly water changes. the blues are significantly more fragile.
a healthy JD is alert and aggressive. they eat eagerly and hold their own against bigger fish, even when they're babies.

As long as you have a larger tank for the future, get the JD . There eager to feed and aggressive, and dont grow as fast or as large as the Oscars. Getting a baby one you will be fine,if he gets bored toss in sone feeder guppies for him to chase now and then. An awesome hardy cichlid with beautiful colors as they grow

JD can stay in a 29 for a long time. my JD is happy in a 10 gal and i've had it for 3 months.

thanks for the help guys, my plans are probably to keep him or her in the 29 till she reaches 5-6-7inch or until i feel that their comfortable and healthy. i started my baby oscar in the 75, and wasnt thrilled with it, it was to hard to keep a close eye on the oscar and he missed alot of food at feeding time. especially if i get a electric i wanna be able to keep a very close eye on them.

i was reading that a uv sterilizer is a good idea with the blue, can anyone tell me about these, ive heard of them, but never used one myself? and is it a good idea?

A JD would be a good lone fish in a 29 for at least a few years (before I knew better, I kept one in a 20Long for 10 years. He was at least 6" when he died.

I moved that fish into and out of every dorm I stayed in in college, then moved it 2000mi in a 5g bucket. It was a tough fish, very attractive and seriously mean (I've told most of his stories of carpet surfing and Oscar abuse here already).

He had every bit as much personality as any Oscar I've known - and he would breech to take a feeder from my fingers if offered (I usually fed Cichlid pellets, but once in a while...).
