I have kept GBR's for a couple of years but never had them spawn. I recently set up a heavily planted 46 gallon and last Wednesday got 4 new GBR's (2 male, 2 female).
Much to my surprise, they immediately paired up and went to opposite ends of the tank. They had been doing their spawning rituals and cleaning gravel but never actually doing the deed until yesterday.
I changed 60% of the water and added my ferts and left for about 4 hours. Sure enough, one couple laid eggs under the filter intake (I know...bad spot):)
Well, after dinner I noticed the clown plec(Who I never see) was over there and gobbled them up. Oh well, I guess it takes time to be a good parent.
Anyway, later on the other two laid eggs too! My 15yr old daughter and I must have sat there for a hour just watching them. It was amazing.
I looked in this morning and saw that most of the eggs were gone, but there are a few left...we'll see. I guess if I was serious about it, I'd move them into a breeder tank, but this is ok for now...don't know if I'm ready for babies yet anyway.
I guess it's nice to know that they are comfortable enough in the tank to actualy spawn. I guess I'm doing something right!
Just thought I'd share it with everybody. :grinyes:
