Hi all.

I have set up this new tank 4 weeks ago. I have put a piece of root in it from the start and today i noticed some white growth on it at the base. I'm sure it wasn't there a couple of days ago. I have attached a close up. Could anybody please give some guidance on what this is and if it is harmful to my tank population? Thanks

Try taking it out and scrubbing the white things off, under some warm/hot water. Put it back in your tank and it should go away. You may need to do this once or twice.

Had you washed it well before putting it in your tank?

If its possible, try put the whole thing in to a pot of boiling water for about 20 min, for 3-5 times... It'll kill whatever those are and will leach a lot of the tanum out of the wood, causing less discoloration of your water. I do that to all my driftwood and my water remains clear.

I got the wood from a local store. It is not new. It was in a display tank there and has some plants already growing on it. So i did not prepare it as i would for a new piece. I just removed it from their tank and directly into mine. It has been in my tank for 4 weeks and it is only now that these are appearing. Getting it in the tank cause quite some trouble as i had to remove the hood, disconnect the pump and filter and all hoses etc. Plus it just passes through the top glass stiffeners. But if it has to be done again, I guess I have no choice.
