Hey all sup. At work we have a big SW tank inside we have a Frogfish. Today the ladies up front were surprised by this huge sack that looks like an egg sack. Its preaty long, if I had to guess I would say bout 3-4 feet in lenth and bout 2-3 inches wide. The frogfish is doesn't have a mate. Could this be an egg sack??? wish i could take a pic but no cam. Can frogfish lay an egg raft without a mate???? help us:help: I did goog it and it does look like an egg raft.

So what do you all think. might the office be having babies? One of the ladies in the front said she found some info that said that the male leaves his testies attached to the female and when the female gets old enough will lay eggs. this sounds funny to me. We here at the office have a fish guy who cleans and keeps tank up and running. They called him but even he is not sure. We would love to here any input from you all. thanx in advance.:)

Well...I found this...http://www.starfish.ch/frogfish/frogfish-reproduction.html. The key point being "About 8 to 12 hours prior to spawning, the female begins to fill up with eggs (40'000 to 180'000 eggs)." Also of note is this "...is why the deep-sea angler (http://www.starfish.ch/frogfish/Deepsea-Anglerfish.html) (Families Ceratiidae, Caulophrynidae, Photocorynidae, Linophrynidae and Melanocetidae) shows a very strange sexual dimorphism. The male specimen is very small and attaches itself to the body of the female. The teeth and the jaw recede and the blood circulating of the two animals become one. The male frogfish spends the rest of his life attached to the female."
Talk about joined at the hip!

This must be what she meant bout the male attaching to the female. The poor lady was freaked out today. When she first seen the fish the egg raft was only 1/2 way out and she thought the fish was dying or turning inside out.

You ain't kidding. LMAO  thanx for the link. So i gues th work place will be having babies. I bet our fish guy will like that. If any live its $$$$ in the pocket for him. Unless they get eatin by the Lion fish or Yellow Tang.

This is really interesting, but I have no idea what it is.
I suggest you send this picture and question to Bob Fenner.

Just an update....So our fish guy stopped back in today and said he talked to the people at the Riverhead aquarium and the Coney Island aquarium and they both said that the type of frogfish we have needs a male partner to mate with. Only the deep sea anglers have the male attach itself to the female. So the egg sack is prob not fertile and therefor no babies. the aquarium places both wanted pics of the sack and offered him a free tour of the place when he brought in the pics. How cool is that. We are located in long island New York by the way, incase you were wondering.
