This morning when I opened the light of my tank I saw a snail floating around. I thought it was dead because I'm having ammonia issues with my tank. I almost took it out but then thought let me place it on the bottom and see what happens. So about 2 hours ago it's on the glass again, I was so relieved I didnt throw it out. Do they usually do this?

This is normal behavior for them. They may also sit around half hanging out of their shell and looking quite dead (I have heard this called hamburger face). They are sensitive to water quality though so keep an eye on him.
You can put them in a bowl with dechlorinated water (enough to cover their shells) till you resolve the ammonia issue.
floating is a completely normal behavior. it can be a symptom of ammonia problems, but usually sitting at the surface all the time, or sitting on the bottom tucked in tight signifies water problems. a happy apple snail will float as part of normal behavior.
