I just set up my 29g tank intending to get a few African Cichlids (3-4)

Theres:
*Crushed Coral Substrate
*Hang-On-Tank Power Filter
*Power Compact 55w 10,000K Lamp
*150w Heater
*Few Rocks I found in a creek and cleaned

I was wondering if any other community fish would be able to live (Safely) in a tank this size with the African Cichlids.
Any suggestions regarding the tank or fish would be appreciated.

:welcome: to AC!

What species are these African cichlids?

Your tank is too small for any Malawi fish, so may I suggest Tanganyikans. A group of shelldwellers and a calvus would be nice.

Thanks for the tip.
Sounds cool. A community tank like that is what I am aiming for... [Peaceful Fish]

Your response implies you own Lake Malawi cichlids, correct? If so, no community fish will be recommended at the very least. These cichlids are aggressive and any community fish will not be able to handle repeated beatings. Furthermore, if anyone thinks a catfish will fit, I don't think synodontis catfish do as a 29 gallons alone does not provide sufficient hiding places for both synos and cichlids.

Right now, the tank is fish-less
I wanted to know about compatibility b4 i just put em in. I thought about a catfish maybe since they are bottom-dwellers and they might not have much reason to be bothered by a cichlid.

Some blue rams along with tetras and corydoras will be a good start or stick with Tarheels' initial advice.:)

Id say try a pictus cat (Pimelodus pictus). I have one in with my Africans for about 2 years with no problems.

But would the Ph level that the Cichlids need interfere with the cat?

Mine is more than happy with the ph being at 8.0. As long as you aclimatise him very slowly over about an hour and have good buffering in your tank to avoid ph fluctuations it would be fine
