Need some help with at least 8 mysterious deaths of my African cichlids.

Here’s some background. The tank has been up since the beginning of October. It is a 55 gallon tank filtered with an eheim 2215 and an aquaclear 70. I do weekly 20% water changes. I landscaped the tank with pieces from other fresh water tanks and some large pieces of shale and iron ore (thoroughly cleaned) I have on my property.

OK. So I bought some small misc Africans from my LFS to cycle the tank and they all lived and the tank cycled fine and after 4 weeks or so I got about 14 more Africans from Atlantis. These were all males. I have been feeding them some HGH vege flakes, Dainichi veggie delux and some frozen brine. The chemistry has maintained the same since the tank was cycled

PH: 8.0
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate – approx 20 – 30
GH: 140
KH: 140 – 180
Temp: 79

About three weeks after introducing the new fish from atlantis, some fish appeared listless and started to die. I did not see any overt aggression in the tank.
There were no external symptoms on any of the dying fish except I saw white cottony marks around the gills of the peacock before it died. Here is a listing of the fish:

Acei: alive and looking healthy
Yellow labs: one dead, two alive and looking healthy
Ps. socolofi: alive and looking healthy
Maingano: alive and looking healthy
Otopharynx lithobates two dead
Ruby Red Peacock: two dead
Copadichrom mloto “ivory head”: one alive, one dead
Blue Cobalt: dead

I did a 50% water change a week ago and have had no deaths since then. Not sure whether I do not have enough hiding spaces, whether there is something else in the water killing the fish (perhaps from iron ore or share I put in tank), or….Please help!! Thanks
