thanks guys, i got a few questions that i couldnt find info on.
i got a pair of them recently a male and a female, and the second day after introducing them into the tank the female was very bright yellow with dark markings and would chase away any fish that comes near her cave including the male. but a few days later, she seemed to have dropped her colors and is not guarding the cave anymore and also gets chased by the male around the tank. the male would flash to her and slap her with his tail, the female would start running away getting chased viciously, but the next minute they can swim together, finding food together in the substrate peacefully.
as im new to cichlids i have no idea whats going on, are they just flirting or do i need to take some actions to avoid any injuries? also how can you tell when they have paired up? the female does get chased away during feeding time x.x
hope you guys can help a newbie out!

Just keep a eye on them for signs of damage from fighting. Id say they are just flirting, when i first introduced my male to the female they started flirting alot but no spawn for over a month. Do be careful with weak / slow fish in the tank as the males can get pretty agressive when they spawn (my male actually killed another male in the tank one day while i was at work, a few days later fry emerged so i assume he just got very aggressive because he had spawned.

If you want to help the breeding nature you could try putting in some peat moss to your filter which will help lower the ph and hardness, this is not NECESSARY but helps make things more like there natural enviroment.
